Match Up to Watch:

Cover 2 defense vs Payton Manning:

It has been a common theme anytime we feature a match up verses Payton Manning. Can the defense slow down the offense??? You will never be able to stop him but can you contain it? Don’t allow big plays to happen behind you. Monte Kiffin is well-known for inventing the “Tampa 2” defense. Hopefully he can work his magic on Sunday.

#92 Sylvester Williams: 6’3 313, North Carolina

1st round 28th pick, Position- Defensive Tackle

Strength:

+  Very explosive off the ball and causes trouble for a slow footed lineman.

+  Tackling skills are above average. Wraps up and throws them down.

Needs Improvement:

–          Can not take on double team and gets himself pushed back. He is too high

for goalline situations.

–          His motor is below average. If he can’t make a big play then he quits or slow

down.

–          Work on getting his hands up in the passing lane.

–          Weak in stunt plays. Too slow to loop around or hit his assignment.

–          Let the lineman block him into a mesh in the middle and can’t be a factor on the play.

#28 Montee Ball: 5’10 214, Wisconsin

2nd round 58th pick, Position- Running Back

Strength:

+  Great job at pressing the hole and forcing defenders  into blocks.

+  His pad level is always lower then the defenders.

+  Has a nose for the end zone with the record in NCAA for most touchdown

in a career.

+  Elusive for a back who is short and stout.

+  Does not quit on the play even if he is stopped in the backfield.

Needs Improvement:

–          Must improve in his pass blocking if he wants to stay on the field.

–          Never expose the ball when diving into the endzone.

–          Waits for the pass instead of coming back for it.

–          Needs to learn the playbook. Almost had a big fumble in week 1 vs Ravens

#72 Travis Frederick: 6’4 312

1st round 31st pick, Position- Center

Strength:

+  Great job of staying on his block and finishing it.

+  Pushes his block to the second level allowing the running game to open up.

+  Good football IQ. Great understanding of the blitz pickup.

+  Keeps the defensive lineman hands out of the passing lane.

Needs Improvement:

–          Hands tend to slip outside the defender’s body which causes him to hold.

–          Pass blocking is below average. Needs to learn how to reload his hip and stop the push in it’s track.

–          Is on the ground way too much. Got to pick up his knees.

Sylvester Williams #28 pick for the Denver Broncos

20130610-110936.jpg

Position: Defensive Tackle

Height: 6’3 Weight: 313 Arms: 33 1/2 Hands: 10 3/4

As guy who play 4 years of high school football and gave everything i could on the field, I know how hard it is just get a scholarship to a Division 1 school or even harder to be a first round pick in the NFL but when I hear the story of Sylvester Williams, oooooooo I get hot!!!! Even Hollywood couldn’t write this unbelievable story. If you don’t know, Sylvester only played one year of high school football and only started 1 game so of course he doesn’t get any offers from colleges. After high school, he starts working in a factory but realize that he doesn’t want to do this for the rest of his life and sees that he has good body type to play football. He was a walk-on at Coffeyville Community College. Good for him! Play some football and get your education but no, it doesn’t stop there. He catches the eyes of coaches at North Carolina so he transfer there. Well nice story! He gets a chance for a better education but IT DOESN’T STOP THERE!!!! While he was playing for the Tar Heels, he earned honors like, First-team All-American (2012) and First-team All-ACC (2012). ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Are trying to make me look bad, Mr. Williams?

Williams was born in Jefferson City, Missouri. He attended Jefferson City High School, and played football for only one season in high school, and started only one game. After high school, he worked at a factory assembled radiator parts. One day after watching Kansas football, he realize he was a lot bigger then players on the field so he walk-on to Coffeyville Community College where he had 52 tackles and two sacks in 2010. Williams transfer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011, and played for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team in 2011 and 2012. As a junior in 2011, he had 43 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The following season, Williams was named to the All-ACC first team. He was also named an All-American by Pro Football Weekly.

Strength:

+ Very explosive off the ball and causes trouble for slow footed lineman.

+ Tackling skills are above average. Wraps up and throws them down.

Needs Improvement:

– Very weak in run support. Takes himself out of plays with spin moves or swim moves, making it too easy for blockers.

– Can not take on double team and gets himself pushed back. He is too high for goal line situations.

– Needs to use his hands better to get himself loose of the blockers.

– Learn how to drive his feet. Get low and drive his feet.

– Gets himself out of position because he is leaning and has his head down.

– His motor is below average. If he can’t make a big play then quits or slows down in the middle of the play.

– Work on getting his hands up to defect the ball at the line of scrimmage if he doesn’t create a pass rush.

Summary:

If you can tell from this scouting report, I am not the biggest fan of Sylvester Williams. There are way too many holes in his game to warrant him as a first round pick. I don’t like to label anyone as a bust but it won’t surprise me if he does turn out a bust. I understand he has only played 5 years of organize football but after watching tape of him, I don’t see him making game to game improvements. Just watch tape of North Carolina vs Georgia Tech, it is awful to watch. Either he doesn’t understand or didn’t listen to his coaches. I think the Broncos wasted a pick here and will misuse him too. They are going to use him in a 3-4 scheme when he is a better fit for 4-3. I don’t like anything about this pick.
