Match up to Watch:

San Diego O line vs Oakland D line:

The name of the game, PROTECT YOUR QUARTERBACK! The reason, the Chargers drafted D.J. Fluker is to protect Phillip Rivers because he was hit too many times. Oakland secondary is suspect so they really, really need to put pressure on Rivers so they don’t get exposed early. If the quarterback’s jersey is clean then it will be a big road win for the Chargers.

Players to Watch:

San Diego:
Tackle- D.J. Fluker
Linebacker- Manti Te’o
Wide Receiver- Keenan Allen

Oakland:
Cornerback- D.J. Fluker
Outside Linebacker- Sio Moore
Wide Receiver- Brice Butler

#76 D.J. Fluker: 6’5 339,  Alabama

1st round 11th pick, Position- Tackle

Strength:

+  Great downhill blocker and can jam a defender inside.

+  Knows how to finish block off. Aggressive on trying to get a pancake

+  Has really stepped in as a started and done a great job of protecting the quarterback

+  Opens up big holes in the running game.

Needs Improvement:

–          Footwork in pass protection is a mess. Gets way too wind and can create any leverage.

#50 Manti Teo: 6’1 241, Notre Dame

2nd round 38th pick, Position- Linebacker

Strength:

+  Does a nice job of communicating to his defense on the fly.

+  Great field awareness.  Does not cover grass in zone coverage.

+  Can break on the ball really well. Had 7 Ints in his senior year in college.

.

Needs Improvement:

–          Not the best as a blitzing linebacker because he is unable to get pressure on the quarterback.

–          Over pursues some running plays and can open up some big holes.

–          Got to keep his feet moving when he makes contact with a block.

–          Bites hard on the play action.

#13 Keenan Allen: 6’2 206, California

3rd round 76th pick, Position- Wide Receiver

Strength:

+  Really soft hands and can catch most passes that go his way.

+  Played on punt return and was wise enough to know when to fair catch or let the ball go for touchback.

+  Does a nice job to block down field and help the running game.

Needs Improvement:

–          Too much shake and bake at the line of scrimmage instead of going right through them.

–          Route running needs some work since he doesn’t have elite speed.

–          Can he stay healthy???

–          Struggles with a physical corner. Gets knocked off his route.

Needs Improvement:

–          Needs to work on his tackling skills.

+  Reads the quarterback eyes in zone coverage, making him react quickly.

+  Always maintain outside leverage and prevents big runs.

–         Has to work with his coaches on using his hands more.
