Bryant-Denny Stadium, TUSCALOOSA, AL

Mostly Clear

Chance of rain: 0%
Wind: Calm
Humidity: 76%

Stats of the Day:

Alabama is 11th in FBS with 41.3 points per game and LSU is 16th in FBS with 40.2 points per game. (I think there will be more than 5 field goals in this game!)

Match Up to Watch:

Zach Mettenberger vs young Alabama secondary:

Mettenberger might be THE most improved player in the SEC and maybe in all of college football. Last year, he has only thrown for 2,600 yards and just 12 touchdowns. Already in 9 games, he has 2,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. LSU defense is not what they use to be and maybe with all the NFL talent leaving has caught up with them. They are giving up 21 points per game which is not bad in other FBS conferences but is a sign of trouble in the SEC. If LSU has any chance of pulling off the upset again in Tuscaloosa then they need Mettenberger to be the greatest quarterback in LSU history.

Safety- Craig Loston
Defensive Tackle- Anthony Johnson
Guard- Trai Turner
Quarterback- Zach Mettenberger

Strength:

+  Comes down hill hard and fast. Gets into the backfield and stops the run.

+  Takes on blocks at the point of attack instead of waiting for the block.

+  Always takes good angels on tackles, putting himself in good position.

+  Can make plays in the open field after an interceptions.

Needs Improvement:

–          Weak in man to man coverage and gets beaten down the field.

–          Way too high. Must bend his knees and keep his butt down throughout the play.

–          Dives at the feet instead of going through a ball carrier for the tackle.

anthony-johnson

#90 Anthony Johnson: 6’3 294

Junior, Position- Defensive Tackle

Grade: 66 Middle 4th round grade

Strength:

+  Can get skinny and shoot in between the blockers.

+  Takes on the double team really and does not get pushed back into the 2nd level.

+  His 4 point stance, is so low and explodes off the ball.

+  Gets his hands in the passing lane and deflects the pass at the line of scrimmage.

+  He is a mad man with his hands. They are always moving and cutting

Needs Improvement:

–          Needs to use leverage better to be more successful.

–          Will stop his feet and can’t create much push.

–          Got to take on cut blocks better. Can’t make a play when you are on the ground

#8 Zach Mettenberger: 6’5 235

Senior, Position- Quarterback

Grade: 72 Late 3rd round grade

Strength:

+ Has amazing arm talent. Can throw that ball at any point of the field.

+ Footwork has been a major improvement from last year. Now he is stepping into his throws.

+ If it wasn’t for him then the Georgia game wouldn’t even be close.

+ He is going through his progression. His 1st, 2nd, and 3rd read.

+ Getting better at stepping up in the pocket and extending the play.

+ Not afraid to take his shots down the field.

+ Makes a lot of “check with me” calls at the line of scrimmage and puts his offense in a good play.

+ Doesn’t matter if its 4th & 10 or 3rd & 22, he just converts when it matters the most.

Needs Improvement:

–          Takes too many sacks. Needs to know when to throw the ball away.

–          Will force the ball into tight windows instead of taking what the defense gives him.

Upset Alert: LSU Tigers vs Ole Miss Rebels

Chance of rain: 0%

Stats of the Day:

Ole Miss has only 22 attempts in the red zone and scored touchdown 15 times which is 72nd in the FBS.

Match Up to Watch:
LSU defensive line vs Ole Miss offensive line:

LSU has produced so many defensive lineman in the past couple of years, Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, Micheal Brockers, Kyle Williams and now they have Anthony Johnson this year. After a Hammer and Nail relationship verses Florida (Sorry, Les Miles!) They showed an ability to battle in a defensive game like the old days.  For some people, the Flordia vs LSU game is boring but not for me. NOW THAT IS FOOTBALL!!!!!

Last week, Coach Freeze made it a point to run the ball inside more so defense can respect it and they did against Texas A&M. It worked and their playbook opened up. The reason they loss, was because they couldn’t stop Johnny Football but who can??? Now it will be interesting to see if they try to do it again. It will be tough because LSU has beef on the defensive side of the ball. If the Rebels want to pull off the upset then they must run the ball inside and outside.

#12 Donte Moncrief: 6’3 226

Junior, Position- Wide Receiver

Grade: 94 Middle 1st round grade

Strength:

+  Wins those one on one battles against the best corners in college.

+  Ran many option routes in college and did a nice job of reading what the defense was doing.

+  Can blow the top of the defense and extend the field

+  Worked with his coaches on the sideline drill and it shows on the field.

+  His double moved caused problems for the defensive backs and they would bite hard on it.

+  Light feet so he can tip toe the sideline and get extra yards

Needs Improvement:

–          Got to work on his blocking to help out in the running game.

–          Makes way too many body catches. Must use his hands more to prevent dropped passes.

–          Route running is below average. If he worked on that more than he could be more deadly.

–          When a bad pass thrown then he must become a defender and prevent the interceptions.

–          Needs to learn about zone defense and how to find the soft part of the zone.

Great two minds in coaching will be going up against each other. Yes, I know it’s not sexy match up but it is intriguing. Muschamp who is known for being a great defensive mind also the best at coaches tirade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKFvpb5GzUUOn the other side of the ball, you have great offensive minded coach who had success in the NFL and has turned Zach Mettenberger career around, who has a chance in the Heisman race. Who will win this coaches battle royal??? (We know Muschamp wins Most Angry Face Award)

#15 Loucheiz Purifoy: 6’1 185

Junior, Position- Cornerback

Grade: 81 Late 2nd round/ Early 3nd round grade.

Strength:

+  Good in run support. Not afraid to get in there and get dirty.

+  Bonus! Good on special teams. Makes a lot of tackles when he is on punt defense.

+  Nice job of disguising blitz so the quarterback or offensive coach can’t see it coming.

+  Best at shadowing his man, step for step.

+  Tackling skills are above average. Not too many miss tackles.

Needs Improvement:

–          His stance gets too high during the play. Bend his knees and get butt down, will put him in a better football position.

–          Work with his position coaches on shedding his blocks better if he wants to be better at run support.

–          To be a corner in the NFL, he must play the ball better in the air. Gives himself more chances for interceptions.

–          RED FLAG! Was suspended for a positive drug test

–          Quits on the play even if the ball is in the air.

Strength:

+  Knows how to use leverage and finish off a block. He is a mauler.

+  Reanchors really well . Does not get pushed back often.

+  Can get low and DRIVE!

Needs Improvement:

–          Hand placement needs to get better if he wants to be an more effective blocker.

–          Doesn’t turn his hips when he pulls. Makes him a little slow pulling to the second level

–          Head gets down which causes him to whiff on blocks.

–          Not as athletic so he is unable to square up his blocks at the second level.

–          Will reach at times and gets out of control.

+  Athletic. He was flanked out at times.

+  Nice job of getting a good chip block against a defensive lineman.

–          Was part of a TE rotation in college. Never was THE guy.

–          Turns his head to quick when he is going out for a route. Slows him down

–          Does not get the ball in his hands as much as he should. (Week 1, didn’t get a catch until the game was out of reach)

FLORIDA-GEORGIA

#11 Aaron Murray: 6’1 201

Senior, Position- Quarterback

Grade: 66 Middle 4th round grade

Strength:

+  4 year starter in college and made his own line calls

+  Understands zone defense and how to drop a pass in the soft part of the zone.

+  Nice job of hiding the football in his play action fake.

Needs Improvement:

–          He did really well in pre snap reads but was horrible at post snap read. If you disguise then he can be fooled.

–          Short in height so he struggles seeing over his offensive lineman

–          Gets happy feet when you get pressure on him.

–          Falls in love with a receiver and throws the ball to him too many times.

–          Needs to KNOW what the play clock is at and get the snap off.

–          1-8 vs top 15 ranked team in college.

–          His passes seem to die down at times.

–          Does not force the ball down the field. Takes what the defense gives him.
